Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions provide a wide range of vocational tertiary education courses in fields such as hospitality, tourism, construction, engineering, computer programming and community work.
TAFE colleges are owned, operated and financed by the various Australian State and Territory Governments. These institutions work closely with industry to provide and formally recognize skills that are currently in demand with employers. They focus on delivering bridging and entry courses that offer accessible pathways into study and short courses that deliver particular skills for professional and lifestyle/recreational interests. They also assist in providing apprenticeships and traineeships that enable people to undertake training within employment.
TAFE qualifications are a combination of formally certified skills or competencies that are nationally recognized in Australia. As a result, employers are confident that individuals with a particular qualification will be able to perform various job-related tasks at a certain standard. As TAFE graduates are job-ready, these qualifications are highly valued by employers across Australia.
Most TAFE courses are flexibly designed in order to offer students a combination of learning and practical experience. Classroom teaching is combined with hands-on practical experience, using the latest equipment and applications to perform actual job tasks, employer visits, work placements and a range of other opportunities and forms of delivery.
Career Advantage
- Focus on practical skills – Most TAFE courses are based on national competency standards that are set around industry training packages. These packages are designed to generate a nationally consistent curriculum and levels of training. As a result, all students at TAFE institutions receive the same standard of training.
- Employer Confidence – Students are required to undertake practical placements in the workplace for most courses at TAFE. Due to this vocational orientation of TAFE courses, employers are confident that TAFE graduates have the requisite practical experience.
- Industry Involvement – TAFE course content is typically developed and reviewed in consultation with industries and businesses. This ensures that student training matches up to the skills required in the workplace.
TAFE institutions offer over a hundred courses that provide qualifications ranging from Certificate I-IV and up to Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Associate Degree levels.
